Rome - Ethiopia's Firehiwot Dado Tufa (2:24:13) and Kenya's Dickson Chumba Kiptolo (2:08:45) won today the 17th "Maratona di Roma Acea", held in Rome, Italy. 12,596 runners crossed the finish line in front of the "Colosseo", a record of finishers for an Italian sport event.
Dado, 27, won for the third time in a row in Rome. She made a strong move at 33km (3:10 the split). With 200m to go she put off her shoes and ran barefoot as Abebe Bikila did in 1960 Olympic Games in Rome. Dado set also a personal best. Surprising Goitetom Haftu Tesema (2:26:21) closed in 2nd place, Kebebush Haile Lema (2:27:39) took the 3rd. Italy's Rosaria Console was 5th with a time of 2:29:15.
Chumba, 24, pushed hard at 32km and also set his best time ever. Last year's champion, Ethiopia's Siraj Gena Amda, could not repeat the victory, but took a good 2nd place with 2:09:21. Abdullah Shami Dawit was 3rd (2:09:42).
A 4km non competitive race followed the marathon. 85,000 took part, for a record of almost 100,000 runners on the streets of Rome.
